SANITY SAVER: Doing Something Completely Different

Every day I like to look for different things to do with the kids.  I find that it's me who gets easily bored of playing the same games, colouring similar pictures and singing the same songs every day.  I like variety.  I need variety.  It is one of my SANITY SAVERS.  Today I tried something new.  Really new.  Our local grocery store was promoting the sale of exotic fruit.  Normally I don't buy it.  I don't really know how to chose a ripe one or really how to eat it but I thought it would be great to have the kids try something new.  And in the middle of winter a little taste of somewhere warm and exotic might be nice.

We bought a Star fruit (the green star shaped ones), a Pitahaya (or Dragon fruit.  The ones with black seeds) and vanilla Persimmon (the orange ones).  I guessed at how to cut and serve them.  Then we each took turns trying them.  My Son was the most reluctant to try them but after seeing everyone else (including his little Sister) enjoying them he tried some.
The Pitahaya was the best! The texture was like the inside of a grape but sweeter.  The seeds were like eating kiwi seeds.  Very nice!
The Star fruit reminded me of apples and the skin was very sour.  I don't know if you're suppose to eat it or not but we didn't.  I think also that the Star fruit may not have been quite ripe.

The Persimmon was also very good.  It was like a sweet plum but without a pit.
I would like to say that I'd buy these fruits again but I won't.  It was fun to try new things and new flavours.  I'll be trying a new recipe to finish off the Star fruit.  The cost of being exotic was extravagant (at least to me it was). The Pitahaya alone was $2.99 for the one!  BUT if we ever travel to somewhere warm and exotic I'll know which fruits to order!

What new fun thing have you done with your family lately?
Will you do it again?
