This time of year I always see many many containers advertized in my local big box stores for such and such a price. I scan those ads often seeing if I can scoop a good deal. I'm always dissapointed to find that the price I want to pay is not the price available. But thankfully I can find alot of great containers at home for cheap!
My MONEY SAVER tip for today is:
Get your organizing containers for FREE by raiding your recycling bin (or garbage can in my case).
This is one of my favorite ideas! I love using the empty peanut butter jar to hold the kids' toothbrushes. I think it adds a touch of 'kid'ness. And to be honest I forget that it's just a recycled PB jar. It actually looks really good in my bathroom. We have many uses for PB jars in our house. We use them for cat treats, to hold play dough and accessories, to hold screwdrivers (my husband's idea), for cleaning supplies, for beans (the dried kind), for dried herbs, for coffee (my in-law's idea), for dry baby cereal and for flashlights (my son's idea). The uses are endless really.
Of course recycled containers work great in drawers and on shelves too. And you can use any shape or colour containers you'd like. I like the look of my organized junk drawer with the circle margarine tub (holding elastics) beside the square nuts and bolts box (holding twist ties). Circle and square; an unlikely pairing but I think it looks great. Above I used a recycled mushroom container to hold vitamins and supplements that come in cardboard boxes. I just find the boxes look messy and don't store easily together. This looks much better and it was free! Below ice cream tubs keep my laundry room tidy and give a place for my freshly cleaned paint brushes to dry.
Another lovely idea is to re-purpose items. My husband and I were given a beautiful votive candle holder for our wedding but we didn't use it much. It was so beautiful I wanted to display it but where? I placed some bar soap in the holder and voila! Beautiful with a purpose.
What recycled containers do you use around the house? Are you proud that you're reusing an item that might otherwise go to a garbage dump or do you not give it much thought?
Please leave me a message or email me and let me know what you think!
