I like play dough. I really do.
But to me play dough is an activity I can set up for the kids to occupy them while I make supper or finish odd jobs or just take time for myself. It's an activity that allows for creativity, has very few rules (our only rule is that it must remain at the table) and requires minimal supervision. To me "playing with play dough" should be a time saver. A way to busy your child's hands and minds for just a few minutes unsupervised. Unless your child likes to eat it.
Eating play dough truly grosses me out! I'm talking about the store bought kind. Yeah it's non-toxic but isn't is mostly just plastic? Yuck! How is that taste appealing?!?
I did consider making my own home made play dough so I'd know exactly what she was eating. So I would know exactly how much salt, water, flour and food colouring she was ingesting. Because, knowing my daughter, she would consume more of the home made dough than she currently does of the store bought stuff.
What to do, what to do, what to do?
I needed something that was somewhat squishy, able to be cut, maybe be molded, but would not be harmful to my child's insides or my gag reflex.
I finally discovered my play dough replacement!!
Cheese!!
Yep, plain old cheddar cheese! My daughter can mold it (somewhat), cut it, push a cookie cutter through it and yes eat it! And I don't mind that she eats it. AND, the best part, I can leave her to play while I get done what I need to get done. Hooray! A time saving activity has been restored!
It's a win-win and a very easy TIME SAVER.
