Home Made Vinegar?

Well... it's not really home made vinegar.  More like home altered vinegar I guess.

This is one of my favorite tips.

As a natural (and cheap!) cleaner I use vinegar to replace the use of bleach.  So mostly I use it when cleaning my bathroom and doing my laundry.  I've also learned I can use it in the dishwasher.

(More on those uses later)

I use so much vinegar in a regular week I really should think of buying stocks in vinegar.  Is that even possible? But the down side to vinegar is the smell.  With bleach you can leave your house smelling like the pool but at least it smells "clean".  When your home wreaks of vinegar it smells more like a chip truck and not "clean".

So how can I use vinegar and have my house smelling clean?

The secret: citrus!

Yes any kind of citrus fruit will do.  The secret is in the peel.  Once you've eaten the fruit (or at least hollowed out the insides) all you need to do is throw the left over peel into a jar or container and fill it with vinegar.  You can smell the difference after only 1 hour of peel soaking.  I recommend soaking the peel for a week to get maximum citrus smell.   I just leave the peel in the jar until I've used up all the vinegar.  Then I toss the peel, wash the jar and start again.  I always have a second jar on the go while I use up the first.  It's a perfect system.  Once I've used up the first jar the second has usually been soaking for 1-2 weeks and is ready for use.

A jar I started this evening with a peel from Jackson's afternoon snack.

A jar I started about a month ago and is half used.  Just keep adding peel to your vinegar until the jar is full.

You'll be left with citrus smelling cleaner instead of chip truck smelling cleaner!

I use orange peel for my bathroom vinegar and lemon for my laundry vinegar.  Why you might ask?  Because I can.  And for other reasons I will reveal later (I am being so mysterious in this post am I not?).
