SANITY SAVER: Being Too Orgnized

While I love being organized I can also be disorganized.  Especially when I'm baking or cooking.  The kitchen gets messed up, things aren't where they should be, but that's okay.  Also when the kids are doing crafts.  The table can be littered with glitter and paper scraps and stickers.  And that's okay too.  I know these messes will get cleaned and everything will go back in their proper places.

If the sight of this mess makes you cringe you may have OCD.

Taking time to clean up every little spill and mess can be a real time waster.  Having heavy hand-wringing anxiety about messes can be even worse.  This can affect our relationships, interrupt our sleep and deprive us of the wonderful life God wants us to have.

I often describe myself as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) but clinically I am not.  I am a stickler for the kids putting their boots in the right places but I don't get anxious if they don't.  Annoyed that they didn't obey? Yes, but I don't obsess or loose sleep over it.  The International OCD Foundation defines OCD as a "disorder of the brain and behavior. OCD causes severe anxiety in those affected. OCD involves both obsessions and compulsions that take a lot of time and get in the way of important activities the person values." These obsession and compulsions become time-wasting, sanity-robbing rituals.  If you think you are clinically OCD you are not alone.  Please visit this website for a list of symptoms if you are in doubt.  Talk with your doctor to find solutions that are right for you.

Sometimes the love of organizing is not a love, it's an obsession.
And this obsession is costing you time, your family and your sanity.
